Diffusion permeability testing vs. Gas absorption testing services; which is better?

  • Gas Absorption test
These tests are mainly used to gauge the permeability and absorption indexes of materials. Gas absorption testing investigates the sheet and the film of inorganic gases. Oxygen is the most commonly tested gas due to its wide application and ease of modification. 

Other than oxygen, carbon dioxide and nitrogen absorption tests are also required for complete material analysis of the sample. Furthermore, the gas absorption testing can be split into the differential-pressure method and the equal-pressure method.

The former is used more frequently than the latter. Moreover, the differential pressure method is further divided into volume method and vacuum method. With the development of micro oxygen detection and micro-oxygen sensors, the material is gradually subjected to gas absorption. 

Various gas detection sensors test the absorption rates of the gases used to test the material. With the latest testing technologies, oxygen and carbon dioxide absorption tests have seen some maturity. Meaning, the results are close to accurate. However, there’s just one other gas absorption test that’s called the chromatography method, which belongs to the equal pressure method. 

  • Diffusion Permeability test
The basic definition of Diffusion is the random movement of molecules through a concentrated domain from high to low concentration. The Diffusion Permeability test, on the other hand, tests the movement of the permeant in question going through the membrane.

This process encompasses the first portioning with the membrane and later the one going through Diffusion. The amount of the material that crosses the membrane is called flux. Similarly, the accumulation of the amount of the permeant crossing the membrane within a certain time and is expressed in mass per area per time unit.

All this is calculated in order to find out the value of diffusivity. That shows how easily the permeant penetrates a specific membrane and is expressed in the units of area per time. The final permeability coefficient (Kp) is described as the rate of permeant of penetration per unit of concentration in the distance per time.

Any of the material compounds that are applied to either of that tissue are artificial membranes that have a lag time. This lag time takes into account the time it takes the permeate to pass through the membrane and diffuse right inside the receptor fluid. This is done for achieving a steady-state. 

However, a steady-state is not easily achieved as it depends on several factors such as,

  • The tissue’s natural permeability
  • Properties of the compound under testing 
  • Flow rates of the receptor fluid etc.
