Is Nitrogen The Better Alternative In Gas Absorption Testing Services?

 


Gas absorption testing services are the tests that measure the material’s differential pressure methods. These methods are used to test Nitrogen (N2), carbon dioxide (CO2), and oxygen (O2) transmission rates. Being widely applicable in the food industry, pharmaceutical industry, and cosmetics, the gas absorption testing of plastic materials, films, barrier materials, metals, and sheets is widely conducted.

Yet, there’s a question that lingers in the minds of the customers looking to perform gas absorption tests or opt for gas absorption tests. But, before directly addressing the question about which gas is better, let’s first discuss the basic principle behind gas absorption.

Nitrogen Gas Absorption Testing Services

Everything starts when the differential pressure of the test sample is fixed inside the testing chamber right in the upper and the lower rooms. In between these, a constant pressure difference is kept. Initially, the pressure in both of these rooms is 100Kpa and 10Pa, respectively. 

The gas molecules penetrate through the sample from the higher pressure room and the lower pressure room. Later, gas permeability is measured, and the pressure is detected through the pressure change in the lower room, and the gas transmission rate is determined.

The nitrogen absorption method is a more effective mercury intrusion method for calculating pore diameters ranging from 2-50 nm. Therefore, it’s used to study pore distribution with diameters and mesopore sizes ranging from 2-50nm. The observations are referred to as physical absorption or physisorption. 

Nitrogen gas absorption is most commonly employed as a gaseous adsorbate, which is used to surface the probing gases. These gases do not chemically react with material surfaces as the absorbates are quantified into specific surface areas. By probing the absorbates even further, the lower frequency measurements of surface area, different temperatures, and measurement scales are utilized.

Moreover, the Gas absorption testing services include Nitrogen as the testing gases exclude carbon dioxide, argon, and water. The specific surface area uses a dependent property scale without any single-value for surface areas to be determined through Nitrogen absorption tests. 

In theory,

The Nitrogen absorption test extends upon the theory of molecular absorption to multiplayer absorption. This means that gas molecules physically absorb inside the solid layers of absorbent infinitely. Furthermore, this also means that the molecules interact with adjacent layers and are applicable to each and every layer.

Bear in mind that nitrogen absorption can only occur on well-defined areas of the sample surface per molecule. Only the interaction with the molecules is considered to follow according to the single absorption scale of the upper layer. 

The uppermost layer enters into a state of equilibrium during the gas phase, which is much similar to the absorption of gases and their disposition rates. This disposition is a kinetically limited process similar to heat absorption. 

Applicability


Nitrogen absorption can be used in a variety of places. For instance, the Cement and concrete industry can use this test for measuring how to refine the cement is and the components used to manufacture it. So, if the cement comprises silica fume, fly ash or calcinated limestone, you’ll know which material has caused the limestone to harden. Other major industries that can gain from the Nitrogen absorption test include active carbon and catalysis.

Nitrogen is undoubtedly a strong gas to use for absorption tests. However, for getting the most accurate results, you must include all the appropriate gases with Nitrogen.
